Essentially, there are two types of flooring systems available, the reusable and the disposable.

Disposable:
Some companies still use disposable peel-off mats which come in set sizes and need to be peeled several times a day.

Reusable:
Dycem products do not use an adhesive so do not need to be peeled. Simply clean the surface and reuse. This reduces your environmental impact. Dycem products are also superior to peel-off mats because they capture a higher percentage of contaminants such as dust and dirt.

Recent tests from GlaxoSmithKline compared the effectiveness of 'Adhesive Peel-off Mats' and 'Dycem Contamination Control Zones'. The results of this comparison demonstrate that “polymeric” flooring is a much more effective means of controlling foot and wheel-borne contamination, thereby effectively reducing the number of micro-organisms entering the critical environment. The results are based on tests at GlaxoSmithKline by Dr Caroline Clibbon, Senior Microbiologist.

The results are shown in the table below;

Size Matters

Often only one peel-off mat is used in the attempt to control contamination. This allows only one footstep of one foot and possibly the heel of the second foot to come into contact with the contamination-collecting surface. Dycem, on the other hand, allows at least three footsteps from both feet.

Peel-off Mats Dycem The Difference
A typical peel-off mat is
only 0.6m x 1.2m
(0.72m2) or 2ft x 4ft
(8ft2).
A typical Dycem mat is
2m x 3m (6m2)
or 6ft 6in x 10ft (66ft2).
A Dycem mat covers eight
times the surface area of
a single peel-off mat, so
you get far more contact
with the contaminationcollecting
surface.

Reduce your carbon footprint with Dycem

Did you know that a 20cm (8“) ball of consumable waste is generated each time you rip-up a peel-off mat?

  • The waste generated from this fills multiple
    dumpsters and landfill.
  • It is estimated there is enough waste to fill 29 standard sized skips/dumpsters in a single year by an average company.
  • Dycem Contamination Control Flooring and Mats require no peeling. Disposal only occurs at the end of their 3-5 year life cycle.
  • All Dycem products are washable & re-usable systems. This means less wastage and a reduced carbon footprint.
  • Dycem products have an average lifespan of 3-5 years and are 100% recyclable at no charge at the end of their working life.

A recent paper by Gerry Prout of Kennet Bioservices showed that over two years the use of Dycem flooring to replace peel-off mats:

  • Uses 18 tonnes less of raw
    materials.
  • Saves over 3 million MJ of energy
    in manufacture and use.
  • Reduces emission of greenhouse
    gases by over 120 tonnes.

Making Dycem an integral part of your contamination control programme means totally effective, flexible and economic contamination control.

Dycem contamination control zones are up to 99% effective at controlling foot and wheel borne contamination when used properly. On top of this they also attract and trap up to 60% of air-borne particulate if used below a work bench.

Around 80% of total contamination in a cleanroom is foot or wheel borne. Dycem can effectively reduce this by 99%.
